Today is moving day. 10 years after starting my painting business it was time to sell it and move on to another opportunity. Change is complicated, both emotionally and logistically. And it got me thinking about how things like moving away or starting a new business require you to be 'all in', because everything is about to change. There is a sink or swim urgency that awakens your senses and forces you to rise to the challenge. Feels like the opposite of being in a rut. But it requires a lot of dedication and hard work. Lots of hard work. It's almost always easier to avoid change and see it is a threat. What does this have to do with you?... First, change happens. We can initiate change or we can react to change. Initiating positive change is empowering and inspiring. I could see that on the face of the young man who bought my business this week, and it reminded me of how I felt 10 years ago when I started it. Second, painting represents a fresh start: a custom built new dream home; painting an addition newly built onto a growing family's home; redecorating to change the mood of a home; painting a commercial space where a new business will hang a shingle; painting a feature wall to reflect a new outlook on life; re-painting an apartment in preparation for new tenants - perhaps a newly wed couple moving into their first place. Staging a home prior to putting it on the market. It is all about new beginnings. You are fortunate to work in the change facilitation business. You see first hand how exciting change can be when people cry as they walk into their new space for the first time. You see how something as simple as a new colour on a few walls can make people happy. As an Agent Of Change for your clients, you are in a prime position to appreciate the benefits of initiating change in your own life...even if it is difficult work.
