WHY: TIME IS YOUR REAL CURRENCY
So I've read a couple of brief blog posts lately that have got me thinking...
You work hard for your money. I know you do. I paint everyday like you, and I personally know a lot of painters. The cash flow can be pretty good if you are smart and hard working and good with people and a little bit lucky. But the point is you earn your money.
What you chose to do with that money is where things get interesting...
At this time of year the pressure to spend and consume is almost over-whelming. Who's objectives are you serving by accepting the constant messaging to purchase something?
Seth Godin recently had a post entitled Unconscious Consumption about Black Friday being a con and how it is an 'invented agenda' - created to manipulate us into stock-piling more crap into our storage units. The same could be said about some of the other traditions this season...Cyber Monday, Boxing Day, etc. He aptly summarizes it this way: 'All that time, all that money, all those emotions spent for not one good reason."
The problem isn't buying something. The problem is buying into the consumerist propaganda that so beautifully lies to us that they have Happiness available for purchase, when in fact, the opposite is much more likely.
The other blog post that coincided with the one above is entitled The Cost of Stuff by Bryan Danger. The part that stuck with me is the quote by the President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica:
'We invented a mountain of superfluous needs.
You have to keep buying.
Throwing away...It's our lives we are squandering.
When I buy something, or when you buy it
We are not paying with money.
We are paying with the time from our lives
that we had to spend to earn that money.
The difference is that you can't buy life.
Life just goes by.
And it's terrible to waste your life
losing your freedom.'
Time is your ultimate currency. Spend wisely.
